How to Make a Password Protected Folder in Windows

Recently I read Microsoft forum and I find interesting topic about lock a folder without any software. That topic started October 14, 2007 and all we know that Windows 7 was not released on that date but I hope that tips still works on my Windows 7 or 8.

Next I want to prove it because I really want to protect any folder on my computer. First I copy and paste the code on there to my notepad and I modify it so the code looks like this:

cls
@ECHO OFF
title Folder netcom
if EXIST "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" goto UNLOCK
if NOT EXIST netcom goto MDLOCKER
:CONFIRM
echo Lock the folder?(Y/N)
set/p "cho=>"
if %cho%==Y goto LOCK
if %cho%==y goto LOCK
if %cho%==n goto END
if %cho%==N goto END
echo Invalid choice.
goto CONFIRM
:LOCK
ren netcom "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
attrib +h +s "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
echo Folder locked
goto End
:UNLOCK
echo Enter password to Unlock folder
set/p "pass=>"
if NOT %pass%==lockit goto FAIL
attrib -h -s "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
ren "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" netcom
echo Folder Unlocked successfully
goto End
:FAIL
echo Invalid password
goto end
:MDLOCKER
md netcom
echo netcom created successfully
goto End
:End

And then I save it as pass.bat at drive D of my Computer. Next I double click pass.bat and it automatically create netcom folder at drive D and then I move some document that I want to protect to netcom folder. Next I double click pass.bat again and it will ask Lock the folder?(Y/N) and I choose Y and it do three task to netcom folder. First task is to rename netcom folder to Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}. Second task is to hide the folder and third task is to make it become system file. When I want to access netcom folder I need to double click pass.bat again and it will ask password to unlock it and if it true, it will unhidden the folder, remove system file and rename it to netcom folder so I can see netcom folder on my drive.

I am glad that this way still work on my Windows 7 but I think this way isn’t the perfect way because if someone know this way he/she can view the password from pass.bat file or someone with advance always can see hidden system file by using some DOS command or from windows explorer option. So as advice if you really want to protect any folder is better to use third party software but for simple protection you can still enjoy it.

I hope this tutorial will make you more comfortable with your computer.
